Oy! the categories!
When you go to the Grammy website and read down the list of nominees and the multitude of categories it isn't hard to understand why some people loathe the whole exercise. Music is a spiritual thing, I feel, in that your experience of it is personal. That's spiritual with a small 's'. It's you and the experience - no outside observers, thank you.
Trying to populate the musical cosmos with patron saints of Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group is pretty much like calculating the number of angels that can dance on the head of a pin. Or trying to figure out how much God weighs and which one of her sergeants is in charge when the bosses are otherwise occupied. Of course, if that's what blows your robe up - then by all means, calculate away.
Not that there's anything really wrong with the whole awards thing - it's just that they're irrelevant to the true nature of music.
The essence of music is spiritual, and if it makes you feel like dancing on the head of a pin, then dance.
